How To Be The Best Student (part 2)- Identify Learning Styles

Week 2 – Identify Learning Styles

Learning styles is a group of characteristic, attitude, and behavior that define our way of learning. Everyone has a preferred way to learn and there are strategies for each learning style. I would like to introduce three different learning styles and it will be helpful to see what qualities and behaviors may best match your learning style. The three styles are:

Auditory Learner

Visual Learner

Tactile/Kinesthetic Learner

Auditory Learner – An auditory learner learns best by hearing:

Auditory learners do best through listening and speaking – they enjoy talking which allows them to process the information. They remember what they hear more clearly; than what they see or feel.

Strategies for Using Auditory Learning Style:

  • Record lectures: today most iPhones and Tablets have the ability to record
  • Recite out loud the information you want to remember several times; this is allowing you to hear yourself “think”.
  • Make your own tapes of important points you want to remember and listen to it repeatedly.
  • Participating is a study group; this will allow for discussions to process information

Visual Learner – A visual learner learns best by seeing:

Visual learners prefer to use images, graphs, maps…they relate most effectively to written information, notes, diagrams and pictures. A visual learner can be easily distracted from a lecture that does not have any visual aids.

Strategies for Using Visual Learning Style:

  • Writing and re-writing notes is helpful – create outlines of notes is helpful
  • Use multi-colored highlighters because you are likely to remember what you read based on the colors on the paper.
  • In textbook – review diagrams, charts, images, for purposes of clarity

Create flashcards Correctly

    • Do not add extensive information on any one card
    • Do not add the question and answer on the same side
    • Remember to ‘shuffle’ cards so that you truly know content and not simply order
  • Replace important words with symbols or initials
  • Organizes by size, color or other visual clues

Tactile/Kinesthetic – A tactile/Kinesthetic learner learns best by hands-on
:

Tactile/Kinesthetic learners are referred to as “hands-on” learners. They use the whole body while learning, and usually have a high level of gross motor-skills controls. Tactile learners learn through doing.

Strategies for Using Tactile/Kinesthetic Learning Style:

  • Utilize study flash cards while pacing around the room
  • Read information aloud while pacing the room
  • Use all your senses: sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing
  • Utilize role-playing and simulated activities
  • Get up and take quick study breaks
  • Overall know that learning styles can and do change over time.

  1. My dominate learning style is visual! My first set of notes might be my version of short hand, but I actually enjoy rewriting them in outline form!
    Thank you Dr. Robin.
